BIOMARIN FIELD TRIP REFLECTION
.) What do they do at BioMarin? BioMarin is a biotechnology company, and they find cures for rare genetic diseases and study cells. The scientists analyse, produce, and purify their products, as well as manufacturing and selling them.
.) What are their main goals? BioMarin's main goals include to maximize shareholder value, and to help people with rare genetic mutations and diseases.
.) What did you learn while you were there? While I was at BioMarin, I learned about the analytical process, purification process, and their production process. They used a lot of complex machinery, including HPLCs (High Pressure Liquid Chromatography), autoclaving (for purification), bioreactors, and several other machines for cell culture.
.) What did you like about the visit? I liked everything about the visit; it was very interesting to learn about what they did and what the process was. I wish we had more prior knowledge of cell functions and complexity before we took the field trip though.
.) What would you like to learn more about? I would like to know more about cells, and about genetic mutations in the DNA and how they affect the body.
