SQUID DISSECTION
The squid is more developed than the animals mentioned above. It has a slight support system- a small piece of cartilage that supports its back, or its tail. It has the beginnings of every system, and has all the senses. It has one body opening, and like the jellyfish and the sponge, eats and excretes through that one opening. It has the beginnings of bilateral symmetry, so it is very symmetrical. The squid is the beginning of the more complex body plans and systems.
Ecology of Mollusks (Squids, etc.): Squids are technically the janitors of the oceans. They are omnivorous, and they clear out any debris and algae that trash up their homes. They are also very delicious. #sushi. Some deep sea mollusks live in extreme conditions. Mollusks are chums with bacteria, which excrete food and nutrients for their mollusk friends to use. Mollusks, like annelids, are also undercover superheroes. Scientists use them as environmental monitors to see how water looks. They are also cancer-fighting heroes- since they never get cancer, scientists study them to see how they can prevent cancer in humans.
Subgroups of Mollusks: There are three types of mollusks: Gastropods, Bivalves, and Cephalopods. An example of a gastropod would be a snail. An example of a bivalve would be a clam. An example of a cephalopod would be octopi.
